My Current Black And White Method (Thanks Victor!)

I’ve always struggled with black and white conversions, often pushing them too far, but thanks to Victor W, I’ve got a method that I’m pretty happy with.
I’ve put together a short tutorial to explain the method, which works in Photoshop and Elements, and can be adapted to other photo-editing software. You can see Victor’s original method here. (My method is a slight variation).

Up until this point we’ve been doing mostly local adjustments in Photoshop and Elements – but that’s not why we bought the software.
We want to make changes to specific parts of our photographs, independent of the others – these are local adjustments, and we’re going to be doing it in the easiest way – by painting on Layer Masks.

Layers are the most powerful tool in Photoshop and Elements – they allow non-destructive editing that can be tweaked and changed until you’re happy, with no worries about damaging the original image.
We’ve played with Levels and Hue adjustment Layers to change the overall contrast, brightness and colour of our images, so now lets explore what happens when we vary the blend mode of those layers.
