Hi Rob,
You talked about those optical slaves. I think you should buy some cheap radio triggers instead. Radio triggers are much more trouble free and quicker to use than optical slaves.
I have been using Aputure Trigmasters and though not perfect by any means, they are cheap as dirt, easy to use and reliable.
