Photowalk 33 - Priddys Hard
Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at 1:55PM
From my house I just have to walk a couple of hundred yards to get to Priddys Hard, the part of Gosport that backs onto Portsmouth Harbour.I was lucky enough to see a couple of Royal Navy Destroyers (that weren't awaiting scrapping), one was taking on ammunition, the other at a buoy.
Fuel Depot Taken With Fujifilm S5700, Aperture Priority, F3.5, 1/550th, ISO 64, Focal Length 33mm, Hand-held

This scene was shot from the Millennium Bridge that crosses Forton Creek, towards the Royal Navy Fuel Depot. I liked the way there's three elements in the photo - the boat, the wreck and the tanks. Colour stripped out in Elements, levels adjustment layers added to boost contrast.
HMS Exeter Takes On Ammunition Taken With Fujifilm S5700, Aperture Priority, F3.5, 1/250th, ISO 64, Focal Length 19mm, Hand-held

I know these shots aren't that interesting unless you're into ships - i used a grad and a polarizer to get the best out of the scene, but I'm limited in my viewing angles.
HMS Manchester Type 42 Destroyer Taken With Fujifilm S5700, Aperture Priority, F5, 1/280th, ISO 64, Focal Length 52mm, Hand-held

This is better, a much more dynamic angle with a little bit of foreground interest to give the photo some depth. Check out the large version and look for the guys in the little boats.
I did a bit of masking with levels adjustment layers on this one - to darken the sky and background and then brighten up the warship.
Duck Taken With Fujifilm S5700, Aperture Priority, F5, 1/170th, ISO 64, Focal Length 15mm, Hand-held

This was from outside the Explosion! Museum, the warnings on the side of a Royal Navy Gun Turret, I liked the colour and simple composition.
Bricked Taken With Fujifilm S5700, Aperture Priority, F3.5, 1/640th, ISO 64, Focal Length 29mm, Hand-held

Another simple composition. I stripped out the colour with a Hue / Saturation adjustment layer, then played with the darkness levels of each colour channels to vary the shades of grey.
Sunken Path Taken With Fujifilm S5700, Aperture Priority, F5, 1/200th, ISO 64, Focal Length 18mm, Hand-held

Another black and white treatment of the features revealed at low-tide. I wonder what it used to be, it's unusual that the path is curved?
Junction Box Taken With Fujifilm S5700, Aperture Priority, F3.5, 1/480th, ISO 64, Focal Length 15mm, Hand-held

Saw this junction book and thought it would make a nice subject.
I was pleasantly surprised by this photowalk - the sky started off bland, but gradually a little detail revealed itself in the clouds. Two of these photo's have got me into iStock (unedited versions) - which can't be a bad thing - so it goes to show, just get out there and shoot!
Thanks, Rob.
ps, A note on camera exif data. Being a bridge camera, my S5700 has a crop factor because the sensor is a lot smaller than on a dSLR, so when you're looking at the focal lengths bear in mind that the S5700 has a focal length range of 6-63mm, which is the equivalent of 38-380mm in a 35mm dSLR. Also the aperture and shutter speeds given are approximate, as for some reason sometimes they're different in the PC exif data than what I actually took, but its usually just the next step up or down.
