Hanging Around With The Joby Gorillapod SLR Mini-Tripod

Joby Gorillapod SLRI have to admit this was a bit of an impulse purchase - I was killing time in the Photography Section of our local Asda while Suzanne was looking at the clothes for Oliver, and saw that Asda had knocked tenner of the price of their SLR Gorillapods, down to £17.

Joby do three sizes of Gorillapods - the standard, the SLR and the SLR Zoom. They're different sizes and can accept different weights. The Gorillapod SLR that I got is rated for any digital camera up to an entry-level SLR with a normal lens, so I can use it with my S5700 and my Minolta Film SLRs.

The Gorillapod is a very small tripod with bendy legs - so you can use it on uneven surfaces and even wrap the legs around trees and posts. The Gorillapod SLR uses a quick-release system, you screw a bracket into the bottom of your camera, then it quickly clips on and off the base legs.

The problem I can see with the Gorillapod is how easy it is to get skewed horizons - the bendy legs mean you've got to take extra care if your shots need to be straight - so perhaps a spirit level that can clip onto my SLR's hot shoe will be in order.

I'm an avid tripod user already - my cheap lightweight Hama tripod is an integral part of my kit - but there are times when I want to get really low (or the ground is too uneven) when I think the Gorillapod will be really useful.

The ability to wrap the legs around things mean that I'll be able to get some shots from some unusual angles, I can't wait to get out and give it a proper go!

Thanks, Rob.
