Medion MD9570 Graphics Tablet Review

I picked up this bargain graphics tablet from the local Car Boot Sale for under £20 - The Medion MD9570 USB Graphic Tablet. I've knocked together a quick video to show everybody.
I was skeptical about using a Graphics Tablet before I actually tried one - and I have to say that I'm very impressed. It makes working on your pictures so much more intuitive. When you're making selections, painting, drawing, etc, it feels so right.
Your mouse keeps working at the same time as the tablet, so I tend to use the Tablet for editing, then switch to my proper mouse for other stuff (but you could replace your mouse altogether if you wanted to), or if you have room on your desk, just lie it down and work on it like that instead of on your lap.

I used the Wacom A4 tablet at my work and it was a pleasure to use... Having 300 euros worth of kit on your desk is quite cool.
I have only ever wanted a Wacom and any other cheaper brands feel like a load of crap in comparison. But I have been known to be wrong before so I am very intrested on how you get on with this.
As the size goes for wide screen monitors, the software will addjust the tracking resolution to make it fit to the screen. If you can imagine a square image and you want it as desktop wallpaper then you can streach to fit. Thats sorta the same thing the tablet is doing with the points of tracking (same goes with dual monitors which I have had experiance with).

Works fine, but I have to say that now I'm using an older, much slower PC, I'm doing less of the intricate editing (it takes too long) - but I'd recommend anyone getting a large pad like this, as long as you have the space!

Believe it or not, I picked one up at a boot sale too, boxed as new. For 4 quid! You don't live near Canterbury do you? Perhaps the same bloke is churning them out, one at a time, for some complicated and sinister reason.
Also got one of those vests with a big bass transducer in to let you "feel" the gunshots etc in computer games. 4 quid again. And a Mathmos lava lamp for a fiver.
Best tip for boot sales is go to ones near where rich people live!
Oh yes. If you want my opinion, the MD 9570 is great. All the functionality and quality you'd expect. Using a pad is weird to get used to though. The pen works in absolute mode, the area of the pad represents the screen 1:1. But the included mouse works in relative mode. IE you can pick it up and place it back in a different place, and it works the same way a normal mouse would. Though this can be changed in the settings to make either one relative / absolute if you like.
Also clicking on icons, menus etc is a bit weird with the pen. But it's not really for operating the computer is it?
But you can use your existing mouse at the same time. Whatever you move, moves the pointer.
In conclusion, it's sensitive and accurate, doesn't jump or skip or anything.

Hey! Looking into buying one of these - but must ask, is it pressure sensitive? ie in photoshop, if you press harder will it be a darker colour etc...?

It doesn't ship with any mac drivers, but a quick search on Google show's there could be some solutions, but I couldn't guarantee it.

It is pressure sensitive, the way I've used it, is with opacity for painting or dodging and burning - seems to work ok.

Hi, I've had one of these for a while but never raelly got into using it very often because of the annoying fact that I can't seem to get it out of mouse mode, so i never get the "1:1 screen ratio" that you get in "absolute mode", meaning that trying to draw is frustrating to the point of impossible... is there any way I can force absolute mode? it's a shame to waste such a good piece of kit...

Have you installed the drivers? A quick Google search and you'll be able to download them, and the pad should work fine.

Yeah, I installed the driers on my previous computer from the CD and it had a funny habit of switching between the two modes whenever it felt like it but now on my current computer it's stuck on the one mode, and even if I change the setting in the control panel it makes no effective difference... I reckon I'll just bear it, there doesn't seem like much can be done.

I got one of these ol' buggers from a Goodwill last summer, and I'm going to have to say, it's pretty decent. Unless you're running anything above XP. Thing is extremely buggy on Mac's. Sometimes the drivers work, sometimes they don't, then the screen resolution always messes with the sensitivity.
So. If you're looking for something cheap for an older computer, try it. I got mine for 7 USD.
