Photowalk 46 - Shapes
Sunday, November 2, 2008 at 5:43PM
Man, it felt good to get back out with my camera and take some photographs, even if the sky was grey and overcast. I donned my coat against the cold wind, went through my WIFE checklist, and headed off into the Autumn weather....My World Taken With Fujifilm S5700, Aperture Priority, F6.8, 1/220th, ISO 64, Focal Length 20mm, Hand-held

This was luck - I was interested in the shape of the lamp-post's shade against the sky, but at the time of capture didn't notice the reflection in the glass. In Photoshop Elements I noticed the sky-scape, cropped in, then used a masked levels adjustment layer on the reflection to bring out the contrast and colour.
Blank Stare Taken With Fujifilm S5700, Aperture Priority, F3.5, 1/250th, ISO 64, Focal Length 48mm, Against Fence

An empty industrial unit, crying out for some attention. This Photowalk was all about shapes, the sky was bland, so no traditional landscapes, I concentrated on form for my subjects instead.
Escape Taken With Fujifilm S5700, Aperture Priority, F3.5, 1/150th, ISO 200, Focal Length 35mm, Hand-held

I like fire escapes. Well, I like to take photo's of fire escapes - and I could stand far back enough from this one to avoid perspective distortion.
Set No Fires Taken With Fujifilm S5700, Aperture Priority, F3.5, 1/105th, ISO 400, Focal Length 39mm, Hand-held

A couple of rusty old bins, in Elements I applied my usual levels adjustment layers, but used a colour burn blending mode to bring out the colours.
As Common As Cortina Doors Taken With Fujifilm S5700, Aperture Priority, F3.5, 1/80th, ISO 200, Focal Length 20mm, Hand-held

Some rubbish at the back of an industrial unit, but somehow although the old van body is square, the brickwork is definitely skewed. Need more work on this one to straighten it out.
Signwriting Taken With Fujifilm S5700, Aperture Priority, F3.5, 1/52th, ISO 100, Focal Length 33mm, Against Fence

Another experiment with colour burn blend modes to give the photograph an almost distressed look.
New Flickr Post Taken With Fujifilm S5700, Aperture Priority, F3.5, 1/125th, ISO 200, Focal Length 11mm, Hand-held

Not sure about this one, I think I went a bit too heavy on the colour adjustments. It also could have benefited from a much softer background - I was at maximum aperture, so I should have backed off and then changed my focal length with zoom to decrease the depth of field.
Fresh Batch Taken With Fujifilm S5700, Aperture Priority, F3.5, 1/125th, ISO 64, Focal Length 63mm, Hand-held

A bit of fun with a round-about sign.
A nice Photowalk, got me shooting properly again after a week off, ready for some more!
Cheers, Rob.
ps, A note on camera exif data. Being a bridge camera, my S5700 has a crop factor because the sensor is a lot smaller than on a dSLR, so when you're looking at the focal lengths bear in mind that the S5700 has a focal length range of 6-63mm, which is the equivalent of 38-380mm in a 35mm dSLR. Also the aperture and shutter speeds given are approximate, as for some reason sometimes they're different in the PC exif data than what I actually took, but its usually just the next step up or down.
