Photowalk 58: Shapes. (And Cold)
Posted by Rob_Nunn under: photowalks .
Alright. It wasn’t Scandinavian Cold. It wasn’t Canadian Cold. It wasn’t Scott of the Antarctic going out for a wee Cold. But I do know that when I got back from today’s Photowalk I couldn’t feel my nose. Actually I couldn’t feel my fingers feeling my nose.
Anyway, a few shots to look at, I tried to embrace the white skies and concentrate on shapes, converting all today’s set to black and white, so tell me what you think…
I’ve shot this subject a dozen times, but today I was drawn to the reflection, the shape and the perspective. I shuffled around trying to get my camera perpendicular to the ground and pointing straight at the middle of the building to minimise distortion.
A few people came walking past while I was doing this, I’m sure they must have wondered what I was up to….
What first attracted me to this scene were the chimneys on the left, and that strange looking air extractor. I took a few photographs, but couldn’t get further away to minimise the perspective distortion of looking up. Not having a tilt-shift lens (or a camera that could use one anyway!) I opted to take some wider shots and perhaps crop later in post-processing.
As it turned out I liked this, widest one the best anyway – so its the old adage of always take a lot of different shots at different focal lengths and positions of the same subject, you never know what will work the best.
I did have to distort the photo in Elements to straighten the Chimneys and the lamppost, which my lens had curved. (Image – Transform – Distort).
I feel cold just looking at this one!
Pushed the contrast in Photoshop Elements using levels and blend modes, and had to clone out a distracting branch on the right.
These fellas were still hanging around not doing much on my way home, so another attempt at a “Cow Portrait”. Like his breath though.
Thanks for checking out my photographs, I think my fingers have started to defrost (I’m typing with my nose), so I’m keen to get out again soon. Snow! I need snow!
Cheers, Rob.
