Another Must-Listen From The Pro Photo Show Guys
Posted by Rob_Nunn under: inspiration; news.
I’ve been catching up with my podcast listening over the last few days, and one I listened to today was Gavin Seims Pro Photo Show Christmas Round Up (Episode 64). Always a very worthwhile listen, the round-tables are even better, with several photographers chipping in with all sorts of ideas.
If you make money from photography, or are trying to, pay close attention to Kevin Swans talk on marketing for photographers. His reality check on what makes a successful Wedding, Portrait, or any other type of photography business is a real eye-opener, you could say it forced me into a paradigm shift.
Cheers, Rob.

2010 New Challenges, New Horizons
Posted by Rob_Nunn under: news.
If you listened to the last SCL Podcast you’ll know I talked about new challenges for 2010 over in the Flickr forum and photo pool. I’ve been thinking about a few personal projects and goals that I want to complete in 2010, but they’ll probably be based around my “comfort zone” photography, so I want to keep sharp by challenging myself (and you) to keep trying new genres in the New Year.
Rather that doing the usual monthly themed assignment, I’ve made a list of different photographic genres that we could try this year, for those (many) times when we run out of ideas of what to shoot, when we could take a look at the list and try something new.
I’ve created a main post with links to all the genre threads, and if you come up with any suggestions for a type of photography we could try, just start a thread and I’ll add it to the main post.
All the genre threads have a link to a flickr slideshow or other websites with images or techniques to wet your appetite, or if you’re stuck for ideas. I’d especially recommend you check out Tom Low’s time-lapse video’s, they’re mind-blowing.
Here’s all the links to the different Flickr threads:

Right, there we go, see you on Flickr!

My Favourite Photographs From 2009 – Transition
Posted by Rob_Nunn under: news.
It’s that time of year again when it’s good to take a look back at the photographs I’ve taken, and pick out some favourites. Perhaps not the best technically, but these images stand out as ones I’m proud of.
It’s been an interesting year, starting off with my Fujifilm S5700 / S700, then moving on to my Canon EOS 350d / Digital Rebel XT, with various lenses including the lensbaby system.
I was surprised at how many shots I’d taken that I really liked, especially as in the last half of the year, time to go out on photowalks was really limited due to work commitments. In 2010 I’ll be concentrating on more project-orientated work, but 2009 has definitely been a good one.
You can see a slideshow of the whole set here.
Here’s a selection from my favourite images:
The S5700 at its best – one of my favourite shots ever. I put the Fuji in Macro Mode, forced the flash, then just shoved it into a bush to take a photo of these fighting insects.
Promenade, Portsmouth Harbour, Gosport Side
The above photo sums up a lot of the work I’ve done this year. Shot with my 350d, a three-shot HDR then converted to black and white. I just love the tonality and the detail.
Marine Parade East, Lee On Solent
Shot with a tripod and a 29mm Pentacon M42 manual lens on my 350d, this was one of my first attempts at longer exposures. It showed me that using old screw mount lenses (with an M42-EF adapter) really works.
In 2009 I made more use of my mobile phone camera (the best camera you have is the one that’s with you!), and combined with Nik’s Silver Efex Pro B&W conversion software I came up with some interesting images.
Solent Sunset, Towards Fawley. Lensbaby Composer (Double Glass Optic, F4)
Lensbaby. I’ve only started to scratch the surface of whats possible, so watch out in 2010.
Feeding The Swans, Fort Brockhurst
Absolutely my favourite photo of 2010. It’s got that decisive moment feel. Taken with the 350d and the 29mm Pentacon M42 manual focus lens, I remember seeing the Swans paddling up the Moat, then the workmen throwing bread in for them, and I took the shot.
Thanks for taking the time to look at my photographs, and here’s to a great 2010!
Cheers, Rob.
